Under the influence of alcohol, the likelihood of accidents increases: judgment deteriorates, and impulsiveness and risk-taking rise. Substance use heightens the risk of poisoning, fire, drowning, falls, choking, and sports-related accidents. More than 7% of falls and about 35% of other fatal accidents occur while under the influence of alcohol. According to mortality statistics, just over one-fifth of accident-related deaths are linked to alcohol, with the proportion varying by accident type.
